Sushi in Puerto Penasco. No way. We have tried the sushi on several Melecon restaurants and after a few pieces just stopped eating. It was disgusting. With that experience in mind, we passed Sushi Sun for years. There is no way Rocky Point could offer fresh sushi. So we thought. Until we stopped at Sushi Sun last week on a Friday. I bite my tongue for every thinking there is no amazing Sushi restaurant in Rocky Point. Located on the west end of Calle 13, it is top notch. If you drive west on Calle 13, it is the last building on the right. If you pass Vicky’s drink cart, you have gone to far. Parking it very limited. I think, 5 spaces but you can park on Calle 13 or Av. Plutarco Elías Calles, which is the North/South road just west of the restaurant.
Sushi Sun stands out for its fresh sushi, crafted by experienced chefs. It is delicious sushi, visually appealing and flavorful creations—even incorporating a unique Mexican twist like jalapeño in soy sauce or Mexican rice.
One of the standout offerings is the hot and cold buffet served on Fridays—and sometimes on Tuesdays. Very rare, especially in the off months. The buffet is so vast. It features a wide spread, including salads, rice, breaded and natural rolls, plus Japanese specialties. The hot bar is extensive. The soups (hot and sour, egg drop) were great.
The sushi buffet was the stand out. They were constantly replacing the offerings it seemed like every 10 minutes. Sashimi & rolls were the highlight. The fish was so fresh. Everything was delightful and we probably ate too much. Salsas, sauces, spices were available to dip.
We got there early, maybe 4:30. By 5:30 the place was packed. A lot of locals. Very few Americans. Would love to see this change with more American tourists visiting.
Sushi Sun boasts an impressive bar featuring a range of Japanese beverages and liquors. The décor—sake bottles and twinkling lights—adds to its authentic Japanese vibe
With over 25 years of history, the restaurant blends authentic Japanese atmosphere with local flair. Its charming terrace, sake-adorned décor, and attentive service enhance the overall dining experience.
To sum it up – Sushi Sun is a flavorful gem in Puerto Peñasco—offering fresh sushi, a robust buffet, a full bar, and a welcoming ambiance with a dash of fusion flair. It’s perfect for casual nights, celebrations, or exploring sushi with a local twist
