Zay’s is a laid-back, country‑themed bar and grill with live music (country bands and karaoke.) This is the second location for Zay’s in Puerto Penasco. Gone is the two‑level space with a shaded upstairs “margarita deck,” but instead a single level establishment that has a nice outdoor patio with a pool table, ample seating and a comfortable interior area. The kitchen is now a focal point where you can watch food being created or the bar for breakfast and fried chicken buffets. In the new space they still offer poker tables and on one afternoon visit, there were two poker tables set up, both 100% occupied.
The restaurant which used to be grouped in the Calle 13 nightlife scene—alongside other popular pubs in Rocky Point is now across the street from Peñasco Del Sol Hotel. For the 90’s Rocky Point diehards, this was Plaza Las Glorias. It is in the same plaza as Max’s, another great locals hangout.
Zay’s is known for their signature burgers and wings. The burgers are freshly ground and according to the owner have a “zing” put into them. I don’t know what the zing was, but they were delicious. If you want to save a little money, go on Monday as they server 2 Burgers with fries for $180 pesos, or $10 USD. Their wings have been the best we have had in Rocky Point, so far. They serve them by the pound, but my only gripe is six wings does not make a pound. I eat or cook wings weekly and know what a pound of wings should be. If you are free on a Sunday, Luis’s (the Chef) Fried Chicken buffet ($10) is amazing. The chicken is cooked to perfection, the gravy, mashed potatoes, fresh rolls and cole slaw compliment the meal perfectly. Once more, this is a buffet for $10 (200 pesos) and they will have multiple TV’s playing the current NFL games.
You will not find a Specials board in the restaurant so check the socials pages. I put a list of the current specials down below. Something that is just amazing and I could not find listed anywhere is the $1 Pulled Pork Sliders on Wednesdays. Definitely worth the trip.
If you have been second guessing visiting the only Country Western bar in Rocky Point, I insist you must. Drinks are cold and delicious, bar top is always busy with locals who would like nothing more to engage in a friendly conversation. Food is top-notch, they are dog friendly, accept credit cards and you can usually find the owner, Chris at the restaurant. He is always willing to chat about life, food and drinks.
